Blog Tour: Among the Beasts and Briars

Hello lovelies! Today I’m very excited to share my review of Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston as part of it’s blog tour with Terminal Tours!

I absolutely LOVED this book and I’m so excited to share my thoughts and some of my favorite quotes with you guys today!

Title: Among the Beasts and Briars

Author: Ashley Poston

Publisher: Harper Colins

Format: Physical Advance Readers Copy provided by the publisher

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Publication Date: October 20th, 2020

Synopsis:

Cerys is safe in the kingdom of Aloriya.

Here there are no droughts, disease, or famine, and peace is everlasting. It has been this way for hundreds of years, since the first king made a bargain with the Lady who ruled the forest that borders the kingdom. But as Aloriya prospered, the woods grew dark, cursed, and forbidden. Cerys knows this all too well: when she was young, she barely escaped as the woods killed her friends and her mother. Now Cerys carries a small bit of the curse—the magic—in her blood, a reminder of the day she lost everything. The most danger she faces now, as a gardener’s daughter, is the annoying fox who stalks the royal gardens and won’t leave her alone.

As a new queen is crowned, however, things long hidden in the woods descend on the kingdom itself. Cerys is forced on the run, her only companions the small fox from the garden, a strange and powerful bear, and the magic in her veins. It’s up to her to find the legendary Lady of the Wilds and beg for a way to save her home. But the road is darker and more dangerous than she knows, and as secrets from the past are uncovered amid the teeth and roots of the forest, it’s going to take everything she has just to survive.

*screaming*

I absolutely loved this book. I was so excited to read it, and I was so happy to be selected for this tour, but this book was even more amazing than I had hoped!

This was the first book by Poston that I’ve read (I’m headed to the bookstore ASAP to get her other books) and I loved everything about it. The characters were interesting, the plot fast-paced, and the settings were truly magical. I would have read this book in one sitting if my cat hadn’t forced me to play fetch with her. I could not put it down I was so engrossed by Poston’s writing and the story she was weaving. Sections of this book had my heart racing with anticipation and I had to force myself from skipping lines to find out what happened next.

My favorite thing about this book is it’s casual Queerness. There’s no big reveal about anyone’s sexuality and within the society Poston creates same sex couples and marriages are total normal and only warrant a passing, almost inconsequential comment. I love this kind of Queer representation in books. Books where Queer people exist and aren’t made into plot points and who don’t have to suffer in order to be themselves, are the best kinds of representation. We deserve stories like this. Fantasy, contemporary, science fiction, romance–stories like this belong in every genre and I hope we continue to see them as publishing moves forward.

I also really enjoyed the ‘unlikely hero’ theme of this book. The main character Cerys thinks of herself as only a gardeners daughter and not capable of being the hero in the journey she has thrust upon her. While at times it did bother me how little Cerys thought of herself I also very much related to it (I think that’s ultimately why it annoyed me so much at times). Throughout the book Cerys has to confront these thoughts and they weigh heavily on the decisions she makes. Watching her work through these thoughts and emotions felt very real and Poston does an amazing job relating this journey to her readers.

This is by far one of my favorite reads of 2020 and I’m really looking forward to reading more of Poston’s books (old and new). This is a truly amazing fantasy novel and readers should definitely take note and pick this one up.

I highly recommend this book for readers who love fantasy and magic and for readers looking for positive Queer representation.

This book has so many amazing moments and quotes it was really hard to pick just a few but I really loved these moments as I was reading and I think they really speak to the heart of this book.

“How did they know what they could be, if no one told them what they couldn’t?”

“She needs people who believe that she can be the hero.”

“Things were so much easier, so much less painful, when I was forgotten, when I had forgot.”

“I would miss you.” “We wouldn’t have met.” “Then there would be a hole where you should have been and I would miss whatever was supposed to fill it.”
